Signs of Spring
02:54
|
|||
count to ninety nine
then you can open your eyes
to seek the things that still hide
signs, signs of spring
to breathe the air you must sing
and speak to life everything

How To Build A Birdhouse
03:14
|
|||
you want to know a secret
but don't tell that I told
how to build a birdhouse:
make a room, a roof, a hole
step one is to gather all the materials you will need
like nails and glue and sturdy wood
some cedar or some pine will do
now use a hacksaw cut the pieces in a square to keep them in
if a bird flies into your house it’s means a death is imminent
so take a broom to shoo him out the window or just up the chimney
if you do your homework you will see the edges become blurry
the sprinklers flowing
grass is growing big enough for me to climb
and all these things are happening but not at the same time
every variation, iteration is just slightly different
not enough to be considered something that’s completely new
under the sun the eggs are done and making noises on the sidewalk
we will run and jump into the bushes that will hide the nest
and gobble up the fruits and berries that are growing on their branches
there we find the relics of the things that we have left behind.
while caterpillars living in a world that’s built on giant turtles
make cocoons around the bruises when I hit my fingers with the hammer

Asterisks
03:08
|
|||
I learned early that it’s not what you learn
it’s guilt cards and heartstrings and waiting your turn
coloring outside the lines is just as cliche
thinking outside the box, who made these boxes anyway?
you can be anything that you want to be
you can be the most unique
corrupt the youth in Athenian schools
hand out gold stars for obeying the rules
it’s not very hard when there's a billion more
the talent show is over
get off the floor
you can be anything that you want to be
you can be the most unique
have you seen this kid, human pyramid?
they said he’d change the world but never said if it was for the better
now something’s going unfulfilled
asterisks on required fields
told that he could be a vet but taught to be a teacher’s pet

Village Idiot
03:18
|
|||
he’s so stupid and dumb
but he’s just having fun
trying to impress the others
in those terrible wigs
while he sleeps with the pigs
I think one of them might be his mother
raise your glass to the ones who have passed
they saved you the embarrassment
because all it would take is just one small mistake
and then seventeen years with a therapist
don’t speak a word of this to mom
yes I know that it will hurt tomorrow
don’t encourage his act
or he’ll keep coming back
with less and less integrity
and the things that he screams
when he causes a scene
around here he’s sort of a celebrity
it doesn’t take much of the royal nonesuch
we’ve all seen every bit of it
look how far we have sunk
cause if you’re the town drunk
then I am the village idiot
and now who would’ve thunk
that you’d be the town drunk
and I’d be the village idiot

Living In My Living Room
03:40
|
|||
take all the time you want
the cat rolls his eyes back and forth
silent afternoon somewhere in the month of June
all I do is wait for you
however long it takes
I’ll never bend or break
I have living proof living in my living room
all I do is wait for you
we’re like a pair of mice under the kitchen floor
looking for a slice of life when light shines through the boards
I lightly press the keys like they were liquid gold
eyes behind the keyhole and I’m hoping they are yours
I wish that I that I could shrink to just three inches tall
I could fit inside this house of mine if I were that small
and when that I have been through every nook, well then
I’d enter into paintings that are hanging on the wall
there is a chain link fence
with a spaniel ornament
the only thing between keeping you from eating me
all I do is wait for you
when you pulled the curtains down
well Lord, I could’ve cried
I’ve been looking at the stars so long they got me starry eyed
all I do is wait for you

Quick Brown Fox
03:47
|
|||
have you ever wanted it so bad
something beautiful that you just had to have
it’s like a miracle, you falling in my lap
it’s ripe for the taking, just reach out grab
but wait they say the fox and hound
are not supposed to play
and so this is how we find ourselves now
you know this is how we find ourselves
if I could I would do it all again
you know I think we should, I just don’t know when
the best songs are written by my friends
loving somebody is how they all begin
the fox will bake a loaf of bread.
the grapes are surely sour.
and so this is how we find ourselves now.
you know this is how we find ourselves.
I'll keep reaching for the vine
I'll have a wish for dinner
I will wash it down with wine
the pills are always bitter
yeah, we find ourselves

Carrot on a Stick
02:21
|
|||
what are we to do
anyone who’s ever sought some kind of life
thinks they got to choose
don’t ask questions, pick whichever one you like
here is something new
is the plan working or is it really not
no one has a clue
but you forgot
you have a lot
like a carrot on a stick
we all just want a lick
but I just want a home
where I can grow my own
think about what you are moving towards
or are you happy just to put the blinders on?
cause I know who you are working for
and that happiness won’t stick around for long
you should not believe
anyone who says that they made everything
they're a lying cheat
running through the race just to get a piece
all in single file
shoving their way just get in front of me
I am not behind
I just hate to stand in lines
like a carrot on a stick
we all are hauling bricks
but what you’re trying to build
is what I’m trying to kill
we should eat the rich
cut their heads off and burn down their homes
and we’ll throw their bodies into a ditch
and we’ll make a new stick out of their bones

Jolly Monster
02:27
|
|||
just a best friend is all I’m looking for
maybe I could win one at the claw machine
he’s got the heart and he’s got the horns
I take him to the park with me and everybody screams
ooh jolly monster I think you’re lovely I love you so why don’t you stick around
he ate the neighbors dog but he was meaning well
what do you expect a ten foot carnivore to eat?
and it’s not his fault the kids cried at show and tell
he gets a little excited when there’s someone new to meet
ooh jolly monster I think you’re lovely I love you so why don’t you stick around
he left me a note saying that he ran away
so that I can go on as a normal human being
but I don’t care about being one anyway
so everyday I’m shouting won’t you come back home to me
ooh jolly monster I think you’re lovely I love you so why don’t you stick around
